Jayne McIntyre

I am an Edinburgh based artist. My work places figures in emotionally ambiguous settings. I draw from glimpsed interactions, overheard fragments of conversation, photographs, film stills, and recently, my readings. Memory is unreliable, and I use that to my advantage: it frees me to capture fleeting moments untethered from a specific time or place, though a pose or garment may hint at one.

I work primarily in oil, sometimes with collage. Many small studies, often monoprints, are made quickly under strict limits of time and palette, which keeps them immediate and spontaneous. Larger canvases take the opposite approach: layers build up slowly, reflecting deeper consideration of the image and its story.
